THE NIGHT

The night nobody plans for.

Every window in the house is open and nothing moves through them. The air outside is barely cooler than the air in the room, and by midnight there is nowhere further to go for relief.

The sheets do the rest. You wake stuck to them, turn the pillow to the cool side, and lie still because moving only makes it worse. Some nights end with cold water on the wrists at two in the morning, not because anything is wrong, only because it is the last thing left to try.

The loft room has it worst of all. It has held the sun since early morning and gives it back slowly, long after the rest of the house has started to cool. A room built for a teenager or a home office stops being usable by August.

A Fern bedroom does not have that night.

THE TWO NIGHTS A YEAR

It is not a lot of machine for two bad nights.

People say it is a lot of machine for two bad nights a year. That is the wrong way to count it. The same unit that holds your bedroom cool through a heatwave also warms it through the whole of winter, every day the heating is on.

You are paying for the winter. The two worst nights of summer come with it. One system, both seasons, nothing burned.

THE ROOM

Placed with the room, not the pipework.

The unit

A slim unit sits on the wall where it suits the room, not over the bed and not fighting the wardrobe for space. We place it during the survey, before anything is quoted. You stop noticing it within a week.

The quiet

At night it runs quieter than someone breathing in the next room. No flame, no rattle, no unit outside labouring to catch up. Just a low hum that settles into the room and stays there.

The air

On a damp night it dries the air as it cools, so the room feels lighter as well as cooler. The same system holds twenty-one degrees when the weather turns the other way, in January.

WHO IT IS FOR

The room that never quite cools down.

The hot sleeper

Some people run hot for years, not weeks. If summer nights have felt harder for you than for the person next to you, a Fern bedroom does not ask why. It holds twenty-one degrees regardless, every night, for as long as you want it.

The loft room

Stops being the hot one. A loft conversion built as a bedroom, an office or a teenager's room finally works in August the way it was meant to in April.

The nursery and the spare room

A number on the thermostat instead of a fan pointed at the ceiling and a guess. You set the room. It holds it.

In writing. If something isn't right, we come back and put it right.
